WHAT IS REIKI?
It is said that disease starts first in a person’s energy field and then manifests in the body. Working with the energy field thus cures the body. I find that working from a wholistic perspective, i.e. physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual, works well. I incorporate energy work in my practice in order to bring healing to the whole person.
Reiki is a Japanese term to describe an energy healing system developed originally in Japan. There were also systems developed in China and India. The first teacher of Reiki was Usui Sensei who received a blessing of light and healing while meditating on a mountain and subsequently developed a system of healing and teaching over many years of practice. It is founded on the ability to access the healing energy of the universe, the energy that lives within all of us. After WW II, when the United States controlled Japan, the practice of Reiki was outlawed by the US who stated Japan must practice only western medicine. Reiki practitioners went underground, and secret societies were formed to continue the practice, learning and teaching. Reiki was brought to the US by Takata Sensei, a woman who studied under Usui Sensei. She developed a more regimented system of practicing Reiki, and this system was what was generally taught and known in the US until recently. Now there is more of a movement towards energy healing using intuition, what feels right to the practitioner, and what the practitioner is led to do by his beliefs, his guides, and his understanding of the healing energy. There are other methods of energy healing (Pranic healing, Hands of Light, etc.), and they all tap into the energy of the universe, the energy that connects us all. I believe what is needed to practice energy healing is an ability to center, ground oneself, and become connected to one’s higher self, to higher levels of energy, to guides, and especially to unconditional love. I call my practice Reiki because that was the system I learned in the beginning, but I now use this as my intuition guides me.
(Definition of Reiki -- William Lee Rand)
Rei – means higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness. It is the wisdom that comes from higher self or God consciousness. Ki means life force (same as prana, Chi, etc). Reiki then is spiritually guided life energy.
Mother Teresa: “There is a light in this world…a healing spirit much stronger than any darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force…where there is suffering, too much pain. And suddenly the spirit will emerge…through lives of ordinary people, and answer in extraordinary ways. God speaks in the silence of the heart and we listen.”
